The Molokai Princess ferry made its last Lahaina-to-Kaunakakai run on Oct. 28, 2017.
The price of an airlines ticket was less than the ferry ticket. The airfare from Kapalua, Maui to Hoolehua, Molokai was as low as $36.
Travel time by ferry was approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Ferry service for Molokai was provided by Sea Link of Hawaii.
Direct air service from Honolulu HNL to Hoolehua MKK takes about 30 minutes.
With the Federal subsidy, therefore reducing the price per ticket significantly, combined with travel time being much quicker, the ferry service became unfavorable for travelers. Sea Link's ferry service was already suffering from fewer passengers. The ferry company was operating at a loss. It could not survive the low airfares and faster service.
During whale season the ferry ride was likely to double a whale watch. All year round there was the possibility of passing a dolphin pod.The Sea Link Molokai Princess is missed.
